Change can feel daunting and often creates further uncertainty. 'Why change when things are functioning how they are'?
I find a visual metaphor helps me understand a concept or captures an idea, often in a way that words don't quite describe. It can be useful for clients to connect with an idea or theme that comes up in a counselling session, through a visual representation - and I really like this image to encapsulate the process of change.
Stepping stones across a river, with the variations in the shape and size of the stones, the textural differences underfoot, the gaps between them uneven, and some more slippery than others, captures something of the process of making changes.
Change happens slowly and incrementally and often feels quite daunting.... and sometimes just standing still for a bit is enough...
… and then glancing back, when stood on a stone which feels a bit more secure, helps to crystallise how far you have come, from stepping off the bank and beginning to trust yourself to stretch onto the first stone and then the next.
Speaking with a trusted friend, work colleague or trained therapist can help to identify where change may be helpful for you.
